			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You are sitting on a boat in the middle of an ocean.</p>
<p>You are moving.</p>
<p>You might not feel it &#8211; but you are moving. You are drifting.</p>
<p>Drifting is a terrible way to go anywhere, being intentional is much better and more fulfilling.</p>
<p>There are two ends of a spectrum people use when setting out into the vast ocean of life:<br />
- drift &#8211; &#8220;God will take me there!!!&#8221;<br />
- rowing &#8211; row the sailboat as fast and as hard as you can</p>
<p>Neither of those are good.</p>
<p>The best option is to sail the sailboat, where there is a role to play, but also the understanding that you do not create or control the wind.<br />

<p>With that &#8230;</p>
<p>there are two fundamental directions one can go:</p>
<p><strong>Towards &amp; Away</strong></p>
<p>They look very similar, the boat is primarily moving forward, but the two directions cause dramatically different decisions.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">You can sail towards an island, country, port, or just out to sea.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">- vs -</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">You sailing away from your past, a harbor you want to leave, enemies &#8230;</p>
<p>And</p>
<p>You could be doing both at the same time, but what drives your decisions overall is always towards  or away .</p>
<p>Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation where we must flee from the instance, event, people, circumstances, etc.</p>
<p>That is just life.</p>
<p>However,</p>
<p>There is a major difference between moving away from the fire and moving away from every piece of wood because it could be a flame</p>
<p>or never stopping your car by avoiding all red lights, stop signs, and traffic. You can get somewhere, but you waste a lot by running away all the time from something that needs not be avoided that aggressively.</p>
<p>The more productive way to live your life [or run a business] is to move towards something.</p>
<blockquote><p>Solving a major problem<br />
Learning a new skill<br />
Helping a group to be able to feed themselves<br />
Making the society better for success<br />
Acquiring an item<br />
Earning an award</p></blockquote>
<p>All visions people have for themselves, desires that lead to action.</p>
<p>In the business world it is the difference between basing major decisions on a P&amp;L (Profit &amp; Loss Statement from the past month/quarter/week) or basing your major decisions on the budget.</p>
<p>A budget is your stated goals &#8211; what you are moving towards.  A P&amp;L, what happened in the past, is important<br />
especially when developing a budget, or plan, but the first question needs to be &#8220;where are we going &amp; why?&#8221; not &#8220;what has happened?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Ask yourself &#8230;.</strong></p>
<p>Do I mostly make decisions based on where I want to go or where I want to get away from?</p>
<p>Where do you want to go now?</p>

<p>In looking at it and listening to the songs, I wonder &#8211; is this the future of releasing a new CD?</p>
<p>A few features I picked up on:</p>
<ul>
<li>you can watch a music video</li>
<li>you can purchase thorough the widget</li>
<li>you can listen to the entire album (at least the standard version &#8211; there is a deluxe)</li>
<li>other info though the widget</li>
<li>easily share on other places, including social media networks</li>
</ul>
<p>Between sharing anywhere &amp; playing the entire album, this is pretty cool.</p>
<p>Not to mention, from the perspective of the band &#8211; they can always turn the widget off.</p>
<p>The other down side for people who might put this on their site is you are giving up some control of your site to some third party. If Newsboys (or really <a href="http://www.uniquestreak.com/">Unik</a> in this case) gets hacked, your site could then show stuff you really don&#8217;t want.</p>

<p>In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in  the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only  by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act  which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.</p>
<p>Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We  have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to  extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of  the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have  appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured  them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations,  which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence.  They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. 		<title>Trust &amp; Direction -or- Shooting F*B</title>

		<description><![CDATA[Facebook has changed &#038; I don't like it, so here is a little history of why I first switched to pushing people towards Facebook, the changes as I see them, and what I plan on doing from here on out. ]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently Facebook changed their privacy policy significantly, beyond  that, they showed the future they are attempting to build &#8211; or a part of  their soul.</p>
<p>I must go back to why I started using  Facebook instead of  <a href="http://Vox.com" target="_blank">Vox.com</a>.</p>
<p>Two primary reasons I liked Vox.com:</p>
<p>1.  privacy settings &#8211; most of my posts were set for &#8220;only me &amp; my  wife&#8221;. My extended family was on Vox.com &amp; we shared with only those we wanted.</p>
<p>2. simplicity &#8211; Vox.com was easy enough that all my family could handle it, especially the  privacy and security options.</p>
<p>Eventually I set up a  Facebook account, but did not use it much. Then, one day, the option to  do friend groups/lists on Facebook &amp; post stuff only for specific  people or lists appeared.</p>
<blockquote><p>I was <em>thrilled</em>.</p></blockquote>
<p>I  started pushing my friends and family to set up Facebook Accounts; it  was simple &amp; secure enough and focused on sharing with  small groups  of friends. Friend Lists were a little difficult to teach people to  use, but over time many people got it.</p>

<strong>Issues Today</strong></p>
<p>I have two  fundamental issues with Facebook:</p>
<ol>
<li>I no longer trust them with  my friends &amp; family</li>
<li>I do not like the direction they want  to go</li>
</ol>
<p>There are many potential business models for a  company like Facebook. Wanting to push everyone to share more and more  is understandable.</p>
<p>In fact, sharing has great value, both  to the company and the individuals.</p>
<p>Yet, that was not the  deal I signed up for.</p>
<p>It would be similar to  my favorite Pizza Place suddenly turning into an Italian Pasta Place.  The food might be similar &#8230;. it might have a similar atmosphere, but  the product that I went there for fundamentally changed.</p>
<p><strong>BUT, there is that new &#8220;easy&#8221; security  System!!!!</strong></p>
<p>Yes, they set up <a href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/settings/?tab=privacy&#038;ref=mb" target="_blank">this  simple page</a>.</p>
<p>My short view of the *new* privacy  settings page is &#8211; it was a needed step, but does not really hit the two  issues I have &amp; is more complicated than they said it would be. You  do not &#8220;one click&#8221; to turn off the apps or the instant personalization  &amp; you should. You also should go through lots of customization  options.</p>
<p><strong>My  Plan</strong></p>
<p>I cannot bring myself to totally leave Facebook  at this moment.</p>
<p>If not for any other reason, when the  great Facebook replacement(s) come along, I want to be able to help  bring my friends and family over. It is also my only contact point to  many people today &amp; I believe in reaching people where they want to  be reached.</p>
<p>Thus, my plan is:</p>
<p>1. focusing on <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&amp;q=http%3A%2F%2FJonathanNation.com" target="_blank">JonathanNation.com</a> &#8212; de-emphasising facebook</p>
<p>2. stopping actively using F*B &#8211; deleting from book marks I auto open each  day &#8211; and removing the icon from my home screen on my phone &amp;  developing a system to auto shove posts of mine into facebook</p>
<p>3.  show people ways to achieve their goals without using Facebook</p>
<p>Basically  I am going back to the concept of a personal hub. My personal  brand/website that I control &#8211; <a href="http://www.JonathanNation.com" target="_blank">JonathanNation.com</a></p>
<p>It  just happens that I drifted into primarily sharing stuff with the world  on Facebook for a while.</p>
<p>I am also going to continue to  coach people in developing their own personal brand.</p>

<p>1.  <strong>They find a niche and they stick with it</strong>. Arthur Morris is  capable of photographing just about anything well. But he’s known for  his bird photography. He has few peers. Artie has realized that doing  one thing well pays off. This doesn’t mean you can’t shoot more than one  subject or style. It means you concentrate on one genre of photography.</p></blockquote>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1316" title="looking-at-you" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/looking-at-you-289x480.png" alt="" width="289" height="480" />That&#8217;s  a great point, as all 7 of them are.</p>
<p>Not only for photographers,  but also pretty much anyone. Here is one more point:</p>

<div>5. <strong>They don’t wait for permission</strong>.  Unless you work for “the man,” you can’t afford to stand around and wait  for someone to tell you to go out and shoot. Pick up your camera, go  out and make images, show those images. It’s up to YOU to make something  happen. Don’t wait around for someone to tell you what to do. Do  SOMETHING and do it now.</div>

<p><span>Just doing what you do  best, are passionate about, and there is an economic engine that works  for you &#8211; is important.</span> Everyone needs practice.</p>
<p>Now  look at what I said that is different from the post.<br />
I said  &#8220;everyone&#8221;.</p>
<p>It does not matter if you work for &#8220;the man&#8221; or  not, you need to practice, improve, and increase your ability to  produce.</p>
<p>If <span>you are</span> working for &#8220;the man,&#8221; one thing that  can help you is to think of yourself as working for yourself and  contracting out your work to &#8220;the man.&#8221; <span>Ways</span> to  increase your skills, might be through training provided by &#8220;the man&#8221;,   podcasts, volunteering with a Scout program, <span>or even a part-time gig.</span></p>
<p>The key is what  he said &#8211; don&#8217;t wait for permission.</p>
<p>All the <a href="http://photofocus.com/2010/04/29/the-seven-habits-of-highly-effective-photographers/">seven habits for photographers</a> are  great &amp; I will be working to apply them to my life.</p>

<p>To release my thoughts, writings, recordings, and other creations to a wider audience is something that I feel lead to do, but am also terrified at the idea. </p>

<p><a href="http://www.podcampnashville.org/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-790" title="podcampnashvillelogo" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/podcampnashvillelogo.png" alt="podcampnashvillelogo" width="307" height="150" /></a>Years ago I went to the <a href="http://www.mercylounge.com/">Mercy Lounge</a> one Saturday, not for a concert or drinks at the bar (though those were available), but for a time of meeting, learning, and socializing with people involved in or interested in Podcasting. It was an ok event, with one stage, and some break out areas. The best thing I took away from that day was meeting <a href="http://www.gspn.tv">Cliff Ravenscraft</a> in person for the first time and being able to get to know him.</p>
<p>The next year, around the same time, came PodcampNashville2, this time at the Vanderbilt Owen School. That year I <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/2009/podcamp-nashville-thoughts/">live bloged some notes</a>. Lots of rooms, lots more people, lots more fun, and I did not make the mistake I had the first year &#8211; I stayed for the after party.</p>
<p>That fall I decided to go to <a href="http://www.barcampnashville.com/">BarCampNashville</a> &#8211; many of the same people *work* both events, but I picked up on something additional that applies to both events: most everyone at both events is interested in learning, helping people, building ventures (could be their own business, or their own department), and something involving either better communications or technology.</p>
<p>It was at Barcamp 2009 that I decided that I would just go ahead and start planning each year to be at each event (podcamp and barcamp Nashville) if not any other reason to support such a great community of people striving to grow themselves or a venture to help others.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll tell you more, and probably review some of my past notes (beyond <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/2009/podcamp-nashville-thoughts/">any posts</a> I can find), but today I advise and encourage you to make plans to be at <a href="http://www.podcampnashville.org/">PodcampNashville</a>3. I&#8217;ll also be looking to be at a gathering of people the Friday Night before, either somewhere in Nashville, Cool Springs, or Murfreesboro area.</p>

<p>Use words, crayons, photoshop, clay, mud, or whatever media is best for you, just get that first vision captured in a tangible, or electronic form.<span id="more-1256"></span></p>
<p><strong><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1257" title="sunset cost" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/IMG_2754-480x360.jpg" alt="sunset cost" width="480" height="360" />The topic?</strong> Your vision for that project. What you want or strive to have it be, and do.</p>
<p>This might be in regards to an organization you are working with (job, non-profit, start up, team, etc) or even your personal life. My plan is to do this with every major project that I am the champion of, including, but not limited to my personal website, a not-for-profit Real Estate Investor organization that I am committed to help, and a portion of the Boy Scouts of America.</p>
<p>Just writing this post is a part of this process for me. It&#8217;s a part of my systems. First to provide me some accountability, but also to share with people I am working with, or supporting. This is something I really want my clients and business partners to do. Not for me to &#8220;approve&#8221; or &#8220;disapprove&#8221; but first for them to remember and gain better understanding of themselves, and then to help me understand how I can better help them.</p>
<p>Once complete in one form, I might strive to make it in additional media. Since talking is sometimes the easiest I might start there, and then move to text, or a visual medium. Having those two versions is also important because it helps the iterative improvement process.</p>
<p>One thing I tend to do when building a system or business is to talk to lots of people about the idea. Even if the other people have nothing of value for me; the act of explaining, or telling the story, or painting the picture in and of itself helps me to improve the plans in real time. Thus, if you write out on a piece of paper your future story, taking and putting it into a computer will improve it, because you are working with it again.</p>
<p>Over the course of this year, I intend to review, revise, and rework the pictures I have painted in the past. This in turn will help me to be more focused on my goals, more motivated to get more done, and in the end more productive.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One common method for helping people discover their <a title="good to great on amazon" href="http://tkn.bz/g2g-amazon">hedgehog concept</a>/<a title="never eat alone - amazon" href="http://tkn.bz/k3p1x">blue flame</a>/<a title="wikpedia article on purpose" href="http://tkn.bz/purposewiki">purpose</a>/mission in life is to ask the individual &#8220;If money were not an object, what would you do with your time?&#8221;</p>
<p>Other times speakers, authors, career and business coaches mention the &#8220;big why&#8221;: why are you doing what you are doing? Why are you pursuing your current path? And generally they stipulate that it is not, and cannot be, just because of money. Nobody (well, more or less) really wants little green pieces of paper, they want something else.</p>
<p>In the book <a title="amazon link to book" href="http://tkn.bz/1goaz"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Go Put Your Strengths to Work</span></a>, there is an exercise where for a week whenever you get strong positive emotions from a situation or gained strength form an event, you write down on a card what was going on, and for strong negative or draining events &#8211; you do the same. At the end of a week you separate the cards and basically go through looking for patterns: what specific &#8220;who, what, when, where, and/or why&#8221; caused you to gain or loose strength? This exercise should help you:</p>
<ol>
<li>gain better understanding of yourself and what makes you tick, and</li>
<li>provide guidance as to what you should do more of and less of.</li>
</ol>
<p>This exercise is more difficult with an organization. It is not just one person, but the goals should be the same: gain a deeper understanding of what makes the organization tick &amp; what the organization should be doing.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1218" title="why" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/why.png" alt="why" width="150" height="150" />What if the first question when a new idea was brought up to a governing board was not &#8220;how much&#8221; or &#8220;how can we pay for it&#8221; but &#8220;does this help us achieve our purpose in life?&#8221; If that answer is &#8220;yes&#8221;, then the next questions should be &#8220;does it grow the organization in one of our primary resource areas (time, money, or brand)?&#8221; followed by, &#8220;do we have the strength &amp; resources to make it happen?&#8221; Granted, there would be times when the answer to the last question is so obvious that the first two questions would not need a lot of time or energy spent when thinking about the projects. Wouldn&#8217;t it be refreshing to begin by asking and focusing on supporting the mission of the organization first and foremost?</p>
<p>I think the challenge I would give to you, future leaders and others, is to go back to whatever your fundamental business building material is. It could be an industry specific focus or not. Go through it again and each time the media asks a question or proposes a direction you should ask, &#8220;how should &lt;enter org name here&gt; answer this question?&#8221; or &#8220;how does this apply to &lt;enter org name here&gt;?&#8221;</p>
<p>Odds are many of the questions &amp; plans will apply. If none of the thoughts in the media apply to each organization you are working with then you should probably find a better basis to build your career/personal life around.</p>
<p>If money were not an object, what would &lt;enter org name here&gt; do? Now, we should put all resources required for success behind that, if we possibly can, and do it. Then we should figure out what the &#8220;if we could do one more, then what would it be?&#8221; and do that.</p>
<p>It applies to you as an individual just as much as it does to every organization you have some level of influence on.</p>

This question really applies to many items in our daily life, though we do not always ask it. Dave Ramsey was asked the question, and it inspired me to add to it a little. ]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1211" title="hire a pro" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/hire-a-pro.png" alt="hire a pro" width="150" height="150" />This morning I was going through my RSS reader and listened to this one clip released by Dave Ramsey on selling your house on your own or hiring a Realtor.</p>
<p>Here is the clip: there is an ad at the beginning:</p>
<p>Two messages that hit me:</p>
<ol>
<li>only a percent of &#8220;pros&#8221; really do the best job</li>
<li>letting people do what they do best allows better results</li>
</ol>
<p><span id="more-1208"></span>I am a big fan of specialization of labor; I want you do do what you have a natural strength to do, a passion to do, and causes the resources you need or want to flow to you. That means that sometimes I do work myself, other times I hire professionals, great people who will produce either better quality, faster, or larger quantity results then I would doing it myself.</p>
<p>There are times to do stuff for yourself. You have a role to play is helping the pros you do work with achieve their greatness, but there is also a reason to work with them.</p>
<p>As for that first point, it can be hard and time consuming to find a real professional &#8211; or the best of the best, or at least someone/an org that is great. That does not limit or reduce the need we have to strive for it, but puts into light that sometimes we have to spend a lot of time, energy or other resources up front to find the greatness, then develop a relationship and attempt to make sure that both parties get what they want, or one day one of the parties will go away &amp; do something else. That&#8217;s why I attempt to help my clients and my vendors succeed, I want them to keep producing what I use/like/enjoy from them.</p>

<li>this is for an email in 4 days, that is good, but is the first I have heard of it &#8230; why not email or post earlier?</li>
<li>there is no link to the email &lt;&#8212; huge, what are you thinking? Check the site and not include a link to the site?</li>
<li>there is no person to contact for additional info</li>
<li>it&#8217;s a one off email, this is not that bad with how few emails they send out, but could be huge, and minimum is a missed opportunity</li>
<li>the email address is not from the domain name</li>
<li>the email address cannot be replyed to</li>
<li>There is *NO* way within the email to contact anyone at the org &#8230; this might even be illigal</li>
<li>there is no way to stop the emails form this org &#8212; again, might be illigal</li>
</ul>
<p>now some of these issues don&#8217;t look huge, and if this was a one time event it would not be, but every email from this org is the same &#8230; blah blah blah, check the website with no link to the website.</p>

<p>It use to be that the &#8220;media&#8221; was a category, and if you hovered over it you would see:</p>
<ul>
<li>Text</li>
<li>Photography</li>
</ul>
<p>In that regard nothing much has changed, but behind the scenes it has. The best example is to <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/media/photography/">look at the Photography</a>; currently looks like this in the main section:</p>

<p>I could not do that with the old way. Might also switch the &#8220;media&#8221; page from a blog style to an area index, best example of that is <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/media/series/">the Series&#8217; area index</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Why?</strong><br />
More control. The ability to present videos one way, and text a separate way is important.</p>
<p>I am also working towards developing a system/program/service so that we can quickly and easily build and manage <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/about/about-this-system/">personal hubs</a> for other people.</p>
<p><strong>Future:</strong><br />
Well, there are more advanced version of some of the page templates we are using here that have been developed, so converting to that, not sure if before or after that the whole theme will be updated to a more modern version. I know I want to use the Featured Content Gallery as opposed to the current tabbed, simply because it is more interesting visually &amp; helps hide if I have not updated in a while.</p>

<p>There are several things I am looking at &#8211; and if you are not technical, please don&#8217;t just leave, I need thoughts &amp; opinions.</p>
<p>Basically, there are a few standards and options out there that could be used, like facebook, google, twitter, openid, etc</p>
<p>There are two questions:</p>
<ol>
<li> which system or systems should be looked at (like facebook, google, twitter, any openid, etc)?</li>
<li>what plugin or plugins should be considered?</li>
</ol>
<p>As for the first I am looking at what people are using and what I expect people will use in the future. Currently facebook, twitter is an option, but the more important one I see in the future is google, because of <a href="http://wave.google.com/">google wave</a>. <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/about/contact/">What do you think?</a></p>

The videos show how robust it is, but also I have emailed back and forth with them and they both reply quickly and have shown to have the capability to support the system.</p>

<p>Once a plugin is in place, I have plans to redevelop this site, and many others to offer a members only type of area. <a href="http://tkn.bz/studiopress">The themes we use as a base</a> have improved dramatically and it is time for JonathanNation.com to get an upgrade, but only after the new plan is in place to provide more information in a better way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So, control &amp; options is one of those things that is important to building and maintaining a website.</p>
<p>You can go and use all the crazy services like flickr, facebook, linkedin, twitter, talkshoe, etc &#8230; but what happens when you want to leave?</p>
<p>Could be the site shuts down, or something better comes along.  One example of this is my personal blogging. I use to use a vox.com account fro two reasons:</p>
<ol>
<li>privacy features</li>
<li>ease of use</li>
</ol>
<p>Yet I always had in the back of my mind that I would probably end up with my own site one day &#8230; I still use the vox.com account from time to time &#8211; because it saves me time &amp; not all posts should or must be public.</p>
<p><strong>URL Control</strong></p>
<p>Today I found a potential solution for one issue I have had for years In podcasting, or just suggesting stuff with websites, one issue is when you make a link and link to the same thing over and over &#8230; what happens if you don&#8217;t whant that link known (or to go to the same place) forever?</p>
<p>Like ArtistInsider &#8211; first used a file hosing service titled libsyn , then talkshow, and we are not sure what we will do in the future.</p>
<p>When we moved from libsyn to talkshoe, it was a pain to not only move over 100 or so files, but also to go through and update the posts/links for the files. What if we could do it all in pne place?</p>

<p>This is a wordpress plugin that allows you to basically do the same thing that tinyurl.com or tr.im (my fav right now) but on your own site &amp; you can change the link a link goes to later (unlike the other systems)</p>
<p>so as a test I threw in two links to see how they would work:</p>

<p>This does not solve everything, but it is a start and it with some other techniques might make it where everything works out the way I want it to.</p>
<p>Now to go find a good short domain name / URL to register &#8211; so I control it.</p>
